What is the best way to clean stone?
Different stone types can be found across the world. Whether it’s granite, limestone, slate, or
sandstone – all require some simple maintenance and the right cleaning approach to help to
keep them looking their best. Because many types of natural stone are porous, they can soak up liquids which can cause stains and discolouration – and that’s where Pressure Fresh can
help.
Different types of stone require different cleaning techniques. The picture below was
a three-step process:

- Application of sodium hypochlorite to remove the stains.
- White vinegar was then used to neutralise the sodium hypochlorite.
- Super-heated steam was applied at a low pressure.
It’s important when cleaning stone not to blast the surface with a jet washer and expect good results. The stone could be soft, and natural stone is also porous, so if you’re using a jet washer, the outcome is more likely to be a collection of holes than a stunning surface! (I see this way too much – just leave it to the experts!) So, to make sure this doesn’t happen, we lower the pressure of our washing system and instead use super-heated steam. This ensures the surface is cleaned without damaging it further and gets the best results.

And here’s the proof! The stone tops on these entrance pillars at a home in Hampshire were cleaned using our three-step process and, as you can see, fantastic results were achieved. For more information on stone cleaning – whether it’s a wall, the exterior of a building or a driveway – just contact Pressure Fresh!
